Our Story: Why We Built Lyric Genie as a Voice-First Lyric Tool

Many of us do! Sometimes it’s a full melody, sometimes just a feeling or a few words. The journey from that fleeting idea to a finished song can feel long and complicated. That’s a big part of why Lyric Genie was born.
My name is Megan Ruthven, and I wanted to share a little about our story and why we believe so strongly in a voice-first approach to creating lyrics. You can learn more about the specifics of our tool on our About page.
The Spark: A Personal Quest for Better AI Music
It all started with a personal need. I loved using AI music generators like Suno, but I quickly realized a simple truth: to get really good music out, you need to put really good lyrics in. The quality of the lyrics, title, and style prompts dramatically changed the outcome.
So, I began a journey of iteration, experimenting with different ways to prompt and structure lyrical ideas. I wanted a way to quickly get my song concepts out of my head and into a format that these music tools could understand and work with effectively. After a lot of trial and error, I developed a prompting approach that started giving me the kind of songs I wanted to create. I thought, “This works so well for me, maybe it could help others too!”
Why Voice? The Magic of Speaking Your Song
From the beginning, making Lyric Genie voice-first was key. Here’s why:
- Ease and Speed: Talking or singing is often the most natural and fastest way to express an idea. You can capture a thought on the go, without needing to type.
- Great for Everyone, Including Kids: I wanted something so easy that even my kids could use it to make their own songs, and they do! It makes lyric creation accessible to anyone, regardless of their tech skills.
- Capturing More Than Words: When you use your voice, Lyric Genie’s underlying model can pick up on more than just the text. It can often sense the melody you’re humming, the rhythm in your speech, and the emotion or style you’re aiming for. This helps generate lyrics that are a closer match to your true intention, something text input alone might miss.

I use Lyric Genie every single day myself, constantly refining it to be a tool that genuinely helps me, and hopefully, many others.
